3 Foolproof ways to find your Personal Style
Finding your personal style is like finding yourself! It is about finding your unique aesthetics and how you express who you truly are!
I am not even exaggerating! I have experienced it myself! I’d love to share with you how finding my personal style was not just fun, but it made me appreciate myself better and of course, has made me more confident in myself and in my dressing.
Let’s dive in!
To define it, Personal style is how you express your true self, it’s something beyond your outfit choices, and it’s unique to your personality.
Your dressing should bring out who you are on the inside, not in some intangible philosophical sense, but your tastes, your design inclinations, aesthetic preferences, and also your natural self.
You have some natural inclinations towards certain aesthetics, designs, and styles, and you should be sensitive to them to dress in harmony with them.
When you learn how to dress and to express yourself, in line with your personal aesthetics, you are more genuine, and you have a sense of peace in carrying yourself well, like you are comfortable in being you.
Finding your style is not going to be a one-shot thing, it’s a to-and-fro process, and rest assured these steps are your sure-shot ways to find your personal style.
1. Choose colors that suit your undertone.
Your skin has a warm or cooler look, due to its undertone.
If you have a warmer undertone, you have a natural inclination towards warm colors and they will suit you, like orange yellow, etc. Conversely, if your undertone is cooler, you will pull off cooler colors better, like blues, pinks, etc.
A simple trick to identify your undertone is the white shirt method. Grab a super clean white shirt and wear it in good white sunlight, or under a clean monochromatic white light.
Observe your skin, if it looks reddish pink, you have a cooler undertone, but if it looks a little yellowish, you have a warmer undertone.
Even trying out accessories can help you find out your undertone, If golden accessories bring out your glow, you are a warm tone. And if silver or platinum accessories give you a natural glow, you are probably a cool tone.
The white shirt method, accessories method, and vein color methods are a few ways to identify your undertone, and as a beginner, you just need a couple or two.
If you ask me, I am more of a cooler tone, and thus I tend to pull off blueish-purplish colors along with silver accessories. But I keep experimenting with some warm colors as well and love to pick up bright reds along with subtle browns.
It’s fun!, Get to know your undertone, and start dressing according to it.

2. The Three-word Method by Alingsen Bornstein
This is a method that went extremely viral on TikTok.
Personally speaking, this method has a lot of thought behind it, and is my personal favorite!
So what exactly is this Three-word method?
According to this method, one can describe his/her fashion in three very insightful words.
Example
- Printed, Elegant & Waisted
- Oversized, Cool & sophisticated.
I like this method and think it’s well-designed because each word here has a purpose.
So, what are these three words the Baseline word, the Aspirational word, and the Emotional word, Let’s understand each in detail…
2.1 The Baseline word
The first word or the Baseline word talks about your fashion tendencies, easily found in your current wardrobe. What are the styles, colors, and designs you naturally gravitate to most of the time?
You can find it easily, just look at your present collection, pick out your go-to outfits, and analyze everything, from their aesthetic type, designs, colors, and textures, to how they make you feel.
When I was analyzing my go-to clothes for my baseline word, I found out that I would gravitate to oversized shirts, sweatshirts, and high-waisted pants, things that would define my waist and look baggy and yet proportionate.
So my baseline word was kind of ‘Oversized’, which will evolve with my style eventually anyway.
But the point is to notice what you naturally pick up the most and are most comfortable in.
2.2 The Aspirational word
The second word is the Aspirational word.
This is about what type of style you aspire to have, analyze what type of aesthetics you search for, or like the most on YouTube, Pinterest, or even while watching a drama.
You can keep a scrapbook and collect all the types of aesthetics, styles, outfits, or even just a color combination. The key is to collect all that you aspire to have or incorporate in your dressing, all that inspires you to dress better.
You might have a celebrity, whose fashion sense you admire, try to collect their outfits and analyze what you like.
I have a huge collection on Pinterest though, and it’s all about sleek shirts, long straight high-waisted pants, blazers, and things that go a lot with Academic aesthetics, that’s my jam.
That’s the reason my words were waisted, sleek, cool, etc. But I chose waisted, as I love to define the waistline, and it’s a masterstroke everyone can try.
Have a look at these aesthetic types to explore yours.
As for you, describe your aspirational style in a word, I know it’s hard, but trust me trying to consolidate it in a word helps you think deeper and understand what you want exactly.
2.3 The Emotional word
The third word is The Emotional one.
It is about how you feel when you have already dressed your best. And how you want to feel in your future style or the aspirational style.
How you feel about a certain type of aesthetic, design, outfit, or style talks a lot about your emotions towards them, and thus finding out what you want to feel in your aspirational type of dressing, helps you incline your dressing sense & style towards your personality.
I always wanted to feel cool and sophisticated at the same time, at ease and in control of myself, And that is why my three words were Oversized-waisted-cool.
Now I am expecting them to evolve with my style as I grow, and that is good! Keep evolving your style with yourself!
These three words, i.e. the baseline word, the aspirational word, and the emotional word, help you have clarity on how your style is hidden in your daily preferences and inspirations.
3. Dress according to your Body type
Your body type is an important area that needs attention when considering your style.
Every body type has its Godsends, along with a few aesthetic challenges that, if dealt with carefully, can be transformed into beauty marks.
Understand your body type fashion, say for example If you are an hourglass, you might want to highlight your waist and balance the upper and lower body.
Also, If you are a rectangle like me, you might want to elaborate on your curves or highlight your beautiful long legs. I do that with high-waisted pants and belts to define my height.
If you have a pear-shaped body, you should emphasize your shoulders and upper body. Try adding details to your shoulders with off-shoulders or boat necks, Also avoid adding too many prints or vibrant colors in pants and skirts, keep them monochromatic and plain.
Firstly understand your body type, understand how your body shape looks in different styles, or expresses itself in different designs, you will learn to dress better.
Here are some quick suggestions on the most common body types
Remember, these are general suggestions, and you will still need a personal analysis.
- Hourglass: Define your waistline, and try to balance the upper and lower body.
- Rectangle: Define your curves and beautiful long legs.
- Pear shaped: Try to make shoulders look broader and create a balance.
- Apple shaped: Add details above the bust line, i.e. shoulders and neck.
- Inverted triangle: try to elongate the neck and reduce the visual breadth of the shoulders.
You need to first identify your body type, and then analyze its strengths and weaknesses.
Even in a specific body type, you can try different designs and aesthetics that will resonate with your needs. Keep exploring!
